Smithers began in the 1950s, owned by Emerson family. It first started as an Evergreen institution.In 1969 it was bought by A. F.Defrane and consequently changed its name from funeral home smithers to Funeral Home DeFrane. In the year 1986 its ownership changed again after it was purchased by R. A, Allan Schraderas.
Change in ownership of the organization characterized its activities in subsequent years. Lowen Group bought the it from Allan Schrader leading to change in the name of the institution. The group would later sell it off to Alderwood after a short duration.
The Service Corporation International became the owners in 2007 after purchasing the organization from Alderwoods until December 2008 when they sold it to The Lethbridge Caring Group Corporation.

His successor was Paul MacDonald who had previously been the owner of clayton in Quesnel for numerous years.He had worked as its managing director immediately after his retirement before moving to smithers.
