Understanding How To Choose Vinyl Signs In Midland TX

By Toni Vang

No business can operate easily without proper signage. The signs are used to market the business or to give customers important information. Vinyl is a common choice for signage and lasts a long time. It has a professional, modern appearance. Unlike metal or wood, it does not corrode or deteriorate. However, there are different types of vinyl and using the right one is important in deciding how to make your business' vinyl signs in Midland TX.

The technical name for vinyl is PVC. PVC has many variations and applications in industry, from pipes to protective clothing. To the layperson, it looks like plastic, usually white. It's also used in paint. In the making of vinyl signs, there are two types - laminated and coated.

Laminated PVC is the cheaper option. This is is a statement of fact. However, the decision to use it is not as simple as mere pricing. While it offers a lower quality product, this is not to say that it's inferior, it merely has lower specifications than the coated alternative. Deciding to use it depends on the nature of the application and the conditions to which it will be subjected.

Laminated PVC can also not be used in hot air welding. It's of a lower quality, in fact, but without being substandard. Coated PVC is higher quality. The issue that arises is that laminated vinyl costs less, while at the same time it has lower specs. The central question is then as to what it is going to be used for and under what conditions, since in some cases it may not be an option at all.

Coated PVC, on the other hand, has a higher tolerance to colder temperatures and is generally more lasting than the laminated alternative. It can also be used in hot air welding. The vinyl of either type is supplied in rolls, and coated PVC is easier to unwind and detach from its roll. This is so because it is softer and more flexible. Yet it is also harder to rip.

Printing is part of the sign-making process. Designers should understand how to design for vinyl, because elaborate, extremely complex designs might not be printable on it. This is a problem where they are part of the enterprise's usual branding. Coated PVC is easier to print on reliably, but the customer should first confirm that their design can, in fact, be printed properly on the material to be used.

The issue of price also arises in choosing the most suitable material for the signage. Coated PVC is more expensive but higher quality and lasts longer. The usual trade-off between lifespan and price then comes into play. But ultimately the customer should try to understand the specifications of each material, something which their supplier can advise them on, otherwise the material that they choose might not be ideal for the environment that they want to use it in.

Printed vinyl signs are one option in making signage, and one which offers the possibility of a DIY solution. This means, however, that the user should research the material to be used properly before starting on the signs. Contact a vinyl supplier in Midland TX if you need more information.
