For those who are familiar with American and Canadian history, they will probably be familiar with the Ojibwe people who live around Canada up to Montana and Michigan. They were known for the ancient language which was the Ojibwe language, now considered a very rare dialect because not many of the younger generation speak it. If one is interested in dialects and culture, check out these facts.
To start off, this race of people were also known as the Ojibway or Anishinaabemowin so if anyone mentions these names, they are all the same. Now, as earlier mentioned, they lived around Canada and the US border. This was somewhere along the Great Lakes in that area. It is very interesting to take note that their dialect is actually one of the main languages in that area being a Central Algic dialect.
Even though it was one of the central languages of the past, it is actually considered endangered now by Minnesota. UNESCO actually announced that it was already included in the Atlas of Worlds Languages in Danger list as it is no longer spoken by the current generation. It is the grandparents who spoke it but their children never did anymore and more so their grandchildren or great grandchildren.
Of course, this prompted a lot of groups to try and revive as well as preserve the dialect by opening schools that teach it. What these schools aim to do is to get the next generation to try to learn how to read and write it so that it will still be there for the next generations. With that, these groups were able to come up with the Ojibway Peoples Dictionary which was used for these lessons.
Now, to know about the dialect a bit, one has to know what kind of alphabet it uses. It makes use of what is known as a double vowel system wherein two letters combine with each other to act as a single sound. It is also pretty interesting to know that there is an apostrophe somewhere in the alphabet which is symbolizing of a sort of stop.
In general, the alphabet of the Ojibway consists of the usual letters one can find in the English alphabet but with a double a, double i, and double o. Now, even though there are some letters there that have two consonants, they also act as a single letter as they just make one sound. Of course, the letters that somehow have two vowels also act as a single letter and have a different sound as compared to the single vowels.
Aside from the standard alphabet, there is also the nasal vowels. These are iinh, eenh, oonh, and aanh. As the name states, these are the ones that have a nasal sound when spoken.
So for those who are interested in learning or just simply knowing about this dialect, here are a few things that one may want to know. This dialect, although to the brink of extinction, is slowly being revived already. So it is not surprising if there are some schools teaching it.
