How To Make Your Dog And Cat Get Along

By Robin Setser

Some pets are able to coexist easier than others. This brings us to the discussion of cats and dogs, which many people believe cannot work together at home. As you'll come to learn, however, there are ways for felines and canines to get along. It's simply a matter of how much work pet owners are willing to put into this endeavor. With this in mind, here are a few talking points that the aforementioned pet owners should be mindful of.

The first thing to know about dogs and cats is that it's difficult for them to get along at first. This is why, as a pet owner, you should make it a point to ease both of these animals into the meeting process. You can do this by petting one animal, before moving to another in order for him or her to take in the scent. It's a slow beginning, to say the least, but you should know that a slower process often creates better results at home.

What some pet owners tend to overlook is the personalities that their animals convey. To frame this, let's say that you have a dog that's more friendly and outgoing. Compare this to your cat's demeanor, which is shyer and more withdrawn by comparison. An understanding of the personalities in question will help you better ease your pets into a peaceful relationship. After all, there's no one method that's going to work for every situation.

Once you have gotten your pets used to one another, make sure that one isn't overlooked in favor of the other. Not unlike children, pets that live together tend to become jealous or simply notice when one animal is given more attention than them. To say that this creates a hostile environment would be an understatement, which is why equal attention should be given to both your cat and dog. This simple measure will go a long way.

Lastly, if you truly want your pets to get along, make sure that they have areas all their own. Even if you find that this development is progressing well, areas that your cat and dog can call their own are important. Dog houses and cat trees alike are ideal, since it's unlikely that they'll have to deal with any intrusions. This is one of the more overlooked factors that will help to create a sense of peace in the home.
